A lot has happened since I last visited Maltby Street Market, and all for the better. With Ropewalk now a throng of food stalls and quirky caverns – totally brightened up my otherwise not so bright Saturday morning (no reference to weather).
With an introduction to honey mead (three for a tenner with free tote bag!), gin cocktails at Little Bird, losing daytime in a Spanish ham den, and lapping up wine in a seafood sun trap, there was a lot to take in!
Myself and a friend got down there at 11.30, and business had really picked up an hour later.
The cone of scampi pieces on offer from the mobile lady-seller along Druid Street was an absolute treat, such a quality snack! Only topped by seeing my friend, eager to devour his own, mishandle his cone and and drop them all over the floor like only a trainee juggler could – he didn’t even take a bite! Cost of scampi £5, the look on his face, priceless.
Maltby Street Market was what a splendid Saturday market hangout, with intriguing places and friendly faces in quick succession. I’ll not be leaving it two years again.
